“Call for Entries for the SUN Awards 2008 are open until 30th June. Categories include BEST IMAGE; BEST USE OF IMAGE; BEST PROMOTION of a PHOTOGRAPHER; and a special category for this year The DIGITAL INNOVATION.”

John Baxter won in 2007 with this garden landscape replete with topiary, caravan, garden shed, domestic pet and fifty-somethings. A killer combination, wouldn’t you say, with echoes of Crewdson? All it needs is a sleepwalker in slippers for the requisite Looking Glass effect. Lovely. Click through the photo to Baxter’s website for more.

Reflect Tyne 07: winner’s night preview party

Although the formal handshaking presentation thingy isn’t until Dec 13th, the Reflect Tyne 07 winning photos are going to be shown next Thursday as part of The Art Works‘ monthly First Thursday wine and nibbles night. I’ll be showing an additional four of the photographs from the Swing Bridge Sense of Place series, to accompany the winning photo. A big thank you to Alex Telfer for the inspiration.

As two of the delighted winners, me and Dan Aziz have had these flyers printed to let everyone know, so please spread the news! There’s also going to be a piece in Newcastle’s Journal this weekend.

Mr Fenwick’s Winning Ways

The Reflect Tyne 07 winners have just been announced. This one didn’t win, but it’s pair did. We get £500 plus a month’s exhibition space at The Art Works in Stepney Bank. Awards and a party is Thursday 13th December. I hope Rob, Beth, Mark and Dan all won something too, and I hope you’ll all come along. More nearer the time.

Wish You Were Here

Click through for some (unedited) photos of the preview evening of Adrian Laurie’s Wish You Were Here photographs of Blackpool promenade. The photographs are magnificent, and show how well Adrian knows the place. He’s got viewpoints you don’t see as a casual visitor. They’re the result of his Ormerod Travel Award win of 2007.

The photographs are on show until 30th November in the School of Art and Design, along with a collection of black-and-white prints from second year students. That includes me, folks! Please do come along and see it if you can.

There’s also a collection of work from student photographers at colleges all over the region opening at the Biscuit Factory on Thursday evening. I will be busy doing something else: an elaborate photoshoot referencing David Lachapelle. Lucky old me.Similar Posts:

Michael Ormerod Award 2007

This year’s Ormerod Travel Award was open to all the pre- and undergraduate students at Newcastle College, (some 300 students), for a prize of £1000 for travel and the printing and framing costs of a subsequent exhibition. An endowment to commemorate Ormerod’s life as a fondly remembered local photographer and mentor, the prize is awarded annually, independently judged and this year’s theme was ‘trace’.

The task was to produce a printed contact sheet from a roll of 24 frame 35mm colour film, and one chosen A4 print to represent the set of 24. A written application detailing costs, objectives and travel itinery was to be included with the photographs in an anonymous package, with a late April deadline. Easier or more difficult than it sounds, hmm? You decide.

My photographs of ‘traces’ were taken on a chill spring evening at a semi-derelict fishing harbour on the north east coast. The light was beginning to fade, and the wind was crisp, though the vast expanse of clouded sky and the reflected light from the grey-green waters of the dock, has thrown a soft blueish cast over the photographs. They were shot with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 lens on Fuji 160 Pro film, and treated to minimal post processing.

Adrian Lourie won the 2007 Ormerod, and he’ll be spending at least some of the summer in Blackpool on his assignment, results to be exhibited in November. More about him then. Meanwhile, my submission was one of two sortlisted joint second, and mighty pleased I am about it too. Will definitely apply again next spring, but in the meantime Adrian, if you’re reading this: congratulations! My short rainy Blackpool tribute set will be uploaded later in the year.

Newcastle College’s photography foundation degree alumni of 2007’s work can be seen on their end of year website. I think that means it’s about time we started thinking about ours.Similar Posts:

Patience and Compassion

Talking with Sirkka-Liisa Kottinen a couple of weeks ago, interviewing her for a couple of pending projects, she talked passionately about photographing things you understand, have a deep knowledge of, a feeling for. I don’t know whether that’s what makes people want to look at this photograph, or whether it’s the sense that we are being given a precious permission to stare. The lens was focused at its closest, so it’s giving the viewer a sense of intimacy, an almost conspiratorial pact with the subject. It’s absorbing. Or maybe that’s just me.

The photograph has just been given a Merit in the Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year Award. To say I am delighted doesn’t quite describe it. After establishing that it wasn’t a mistake, I immediately phoned my mentor, and we both smiled and smiled and smiled. The prize is a bucket of Fujifilm, and a chance to go for the big one. Something unusual and quirky always wins, so this gentle portrait probably isn’t going to get any further, but it’s marvellous and Connie is going to be absolutely delighted.

My Northern Exposure co-founder and friend said w00t! Which is probably because she’s a geek.Similar Posts:
