How Commenting Works – A Ten Step Guide

1. If it’s your first comment, it’ll be held in a queue and not posted until it’s been checked by a human being.

2. After your first comment has been approved, you will be able to comment again from the same computer without being held in the queue.

3. If you start using a different computer (say at work), or a different ISP, you will be treated like a new commenter, and your first comment will go into the queue.

4. Any comment will be automatically rejected by Askimet, WordPress’s powerful spam catcher, if it’s:

  • selling viagra or lottery tickets or whatnot
  • links to porn sites
  • a trackback to an ad farm (there are a lot of these about)
  • some incomprehensible gobbledegook like gokma (wtf?)

5. Your comment will probably be approved if you are clearly real person with something to say.

6. Your comment won’t be blocked if what you are saying is controversial, and swear words are allowed.

7. A dim view is taken of outright rudeness or persistent trolling. If you’re unsure what trolling means, Google is your friend.

8. If you have commented and your comment hasn’t appeared on the site, wait. There is life beyond the internet and some people even inhabit different time zones to enjoy it.

9. If your comment hasn’t appeared after say 24-48 hours, please feel free to send an email. Sending repeated comments all saying the same thing won’t help to get them read.

10. Feel free to engage in discussion with your fellow commenters. There is RSS for comments so you can follow the discussion in your reader or be alerted by email.

We love comments, they help keep the search engine robots happy. Have at it, and enjoy!
