The 06.12 train from Durham City to Kings Cross on Saturday morning, the whole country covered in more snow than seen before in my lifetime, the hour long drive to Durham a white-out, not a scrap of tarmac to be seen, not even on the A19 or at the AIM junction. The first photograph is as the light lifted before dawn somewhere near Spennymoor, and the last is probably the side of one of the stands at Arsenal Football Club.
The pinky-orange glow in many of them is from the lights inside the carriage. In this photo, the top of the heads of some manly men heading for the Boat Show, in our quiet carriage, no football supporters, no shoppers, no-one going to work. The blues really are the sky.
The camera produces better results on these snow scenes when overexposing by a couple of stops or so. But by now, with all the practice we’ve all been having, everyone knows that. Check and adjust.
Not that there’s a single keeper here, for any of my ongoing projects, but it was a lovely way to spend the time.
