Thinking through issues of editing recently. Not post-processing, that’s something quite different, and something I rarely do, preferring the work to happen behind and in the camera than behind a computer screen. Editing is the process of selecting which photographs fit together, and how they do or don’t match in some way one with another. Along with that goes sequencing: what order to put them in, in a book, on a wall, on a contact or tear sheet.
This might help, although there is surely a whole lot more.
The Gerlingen photographs, the work for Kalapremi, the St John’s Square study I’ve been doing: series’ that all need editing, sequencing, individual photographs chosen that resonate with each other, push away from or towards each other. Coherence, or dissonance. One or the other. Or can there be both, in the same series? A series. Yes.
