It’s actually extremely, wonderfully gratifying to find so many great places to eat in the region. Whether that’s changed over these last 5 years or the determination with which good watering holes are being hunted down has increased in ferocity, it’s all good. So with eating companions increasing in number from none, to a mighty and rather discerning two, we thought we might start blogging about it. Or not. Aren’t there rather a lot of foodie blogs around?
So before too much delicious vino is consumed and people start taking photos of reflections in glassware, this recommendation is rather surprising. The Gateshead Hilton is an ugly yellow slab on the south of the gorge, lowering over Armstrong’s genius Swing Bridge. Mike Wilkinson is the exec chef, and up there on the top floor on a wild and blustery day in May, he served a 1970s Get Carter celebration lunch. Prawns Marie Rose and Duck a l’Orange would have been followed by Black Forest Gateau, most definitely, except we were contentedly, and deliciously replete.

Will definitely go again, maybe after one of those revitalising and inspiring openings the at Side Gallery. In the meantime, it’s probably worth practicing describing tastes, flavours, ambience, and reading the Saturday supplements to see just how restaurant reviews are done these days.
The light up there was exquisite, plenty of soft spring ambient, filtered by the acres of glass, and those yards and yards of crisp white linen make great reflectors. Still, a fast lens is a good idea if you can get away with it, otherwise it’ll be another job for the cameraphone.
