Women and Photography
In response to Knautia’s articulate post about BBC4’s inability to see that there are or have ever been any women taking photos apart from Diane Arbus, this is the start of a series of posts featuring women who are working in the industry now. Here’s my preliminary list of questions:
1. What got you started in the photography world?
2. What gets you started in the mornings?
3. Who is/are your favourite woman photographer(s), and why?
4. What are your specialisms, the types of photos you’re best known for, and what do you photograph just for fun?
5. The exhibition or gallery showing that’s moved you the most.
6. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
7. Is there a women’s aesthetic in photography?
8. Apologies in advance for this:
- film/digital ?
- Nikon/Canon ?
- Apple/PC ?
- digital / wet darkroom ?
9. Where do you think the industry is going, given the rise of cheap or free ’stock’ and a camera in everyone’s hand?
10. What would delight you the most, if it happened this week?
I’ve already got an early reply, which I’ll post with examples of her superb photos, later this evening. If you think I didn’t ask the right questions, or not enough of them, please go ahead and ask more in the comments, either here, or at the post of the photographer/s being featured.
Please get involved: if you’re a woman, taking photographs professionally, please mail me your answers (with 2 or 3 jpgs) and I’ll post one every few days.

10. Pass. You wouldn’t publish it.
None of this is for, or about you, Joe.
This is your final warning. Any more trolling on my website, and access for you and your comments will be removed.
