Buy Nothing Day tomorrow Sat 24th Nov
Click through to find out what it’s all about, and do make sure to visit the Rev Billy to find out what Jesus would buy. I’m pretty certain it’s not going to be a brand new plasticky D300 or a stash of memory made in China.
Buying nothing isn’t at all difficult once you get into the swing. It’s actually much easier than struggling though the latest incarnation of Asda. Book Crossing is the new best way of getting free books, and it’s better than having shelves of dusty paperbacks clogging up your iChing or your chakras or whatever.
Finding BC, way back in the 90s, helped me divest of one whole huge shopping addiction in one go. And there are meets in most parts of the country now, friendly groups in Durham and Newcastle, populated by mildly eccentric bookworms, which is exactly what you want.
There’s also the huge and rambling freecycle phenomenon, now unfortunately riven by rowing, accusations and People’s Front of Judea style rifts. Do just go ahead and join the biggest or the nicest group where you live, and give things away that you no longer need. Having a clear-out is great karma, and always very cleansing. You’ll find it an especially good source of free darkroom equipment, and I’ve been able to dispose of bagsfuls of those useful little plastic 35mm film barrels. No idea what people use them for, mind.
