Think this was taken with the Nikon 601: the second proper camera I bought, in the lovely Quiggs in Glasgow, after the Zenit11’s shutter curtain stuck. They mended the Zenit at the same time, for nothing: took no more than 5 minutes. That Nikon has the sort of whizzbang features like through-the-lens metering and a pop-up fill flash that are hardly any different on new Nikons now, and I love it.
The photo was taken with an old 15mm lens with glass approximately the size and weight of a cricket ball, and on Agfa Precisa slide film, cross processed and scanned in Spectrum’s a minilab to produce these colours. Cross processing is easy; just cross your fingers and send it to Spectrum any minilab to do as C41. Finding cheap slide film is getting harder, but there are still hoarders of the now obsolete Agfa lurking around on Ebay. There’s probably some in my fridge if you’d like to give it a try.
Fiddling with the colours in the scanner, or in the darkroom is easy enough to do if you’re looking for a more natural effect, but if you’re trying cross processing, all bets are off that you do.
The Viewmaster was £2 and I bought a cracking wee clamshell Olympus XA for £4. It was a smashing day out. At South Shields market you can buy yourself lunch and a bagful of bargains for less than a fiver, easily. Marvellous place. Fridays are best.
